Private Tutoring

Welcome to our booking page for private tutoring for students in grades 3-12. The Wooten Center is a nonprofit agency founded in 1990 by Myrtle Faye Rumph in honor of her son, killed in a drive-by shooting. Students can receive assessments and tutoring in math and English Language Arts (ELA), including homework assistance, at no cost, thanks to our donors.

How do you book sessions?
Click on Book Now on this page to choose a tutor from the drop-down menu. Click on a date and time. Only open sessions will show. Choose another time if the session wanted is booked. If all sessions are full, call our office as we are continually onboarding new tutors. Click here for our tutor schedule.

When are the sessions confirmed?

Your student is confirmed as soon as you submit your form. You will receive a confirmation email with information for obtaining the logins. You are welcome to book sessions through December 17, 2021, the last day of our fall session.

How many sessions can you book?

Students can receive a total of three private tutoring sessions per week. All sessions are 45 minutes each. Call the office at (323) 756-7203 if you would like to request more days for special circumstances. We encourage you to book multiple sessions the same days and times to keep the same tutor. Click here for our current tutors from schools including USC, UCLA, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Azusa Pacific, and St. John's University.

How is tutoring conducted?

All students will receive i-Ready assessments to help identify their strengths and challenges in math and/or reading. i-Ready creates an study plan with online lessons adapting to your student's needs. Tutors help students study and complete the lessons. Students can also use their i-Ready login to work on their own at home. If your student has completed the i-Ready diagnostics at their school, contact our office at (323) 756-7203 to discuss the options.

Is homework assistance available?

Yes. Students can receive help with homework in their tutoring sessions. While we largely focus on math and ELA, students can request help with other subjects. If a tutor is unable to help with subjects other than math or ELA, call our office to see if another tutor skilled in the area wanted is available.

Where can I view our tutoring appointments and share homework assignments?

All parents with students enrolled in our afterschool program can subscribe to our Parent Portal to save your appointments, to share homework with tutors, and to receive logins for classes including robotics, Minecraft, singing, Teen Talk and world languages and culture with cooking. Click here to subscribe.

How can I review my student's i-Ready results?

To review you student's results, schedule a Score Talk for up to 30 minutes with our education director, Ms. Christiane.
